HAVEN functions in two distinct modes: as a classical sculpture that recalls archetypal visions of home, and as a functioning domicile for its honeybee homesteaders. While conventional beehives are made for the easy harvesting of honey by beekeepers, HAVEN is a whole new kind of beehive, designed to support the wellbeing of its honeybee inhabitants. Furthermore, whereas commercial domestic honeybees are deprived of their own nutritious honey and fed high fructose corn syrup, the inhabitants of HAVEN will be able to keep and eat the fruits of their labor.
Spreading out across the United States, HAVEN will be a network of living sculptures, specifically created to house colonies of wild honeybees.
HAVEN takes a holistic approach to supporting American honeybee populations by creating a nationwide sanctuary of 1000 hives. This support will provide ideal, safe home environments where the bees can thrive with as few challenges as possible. This network will also provide a systematic means of monitoring large numbers of our country’s bee population.
HAVEN engages the viewing public with its aesthetic form and educates with its functionality, helping our communities to contemplate the interconnectedness of species and the ways we can respect and revere nature. Informational plaques inform passersby of the sculpture’s mission and direct those who want to learn more to this website.
